February events
February has so far been a very busy month. I have been trying to juggle my 6 classes, write my dissertation, my 2 reviews, and conference paper, &c. I have also been trying to get some culture at the same time. I was at the New York Philharmonic and heard Lorin Maazel conduct Mozart's 39th, 40th and 41st symponhies. I was at a philosophy conference where Alvin Goldman spoke exceptionally well. I also attended a Nets game with a bunch of people. It was all a lot of fun. Now I must prepare for tomorrow.

I haven't yet taken advantage of a concert conducted by Lorin Maazel since he's been in New York. He's my absolute favorite. Most people will tell you that Bruno Walter is the greatest interpreter of Beethoven, him being German and all ... but Maazel, when he was with the Cleveland Orchestra, did the most regal interpretation of Beethoven's "Eroica" symphony imaginable. I'd really love to see him conduct sometime.
If I could make a recommendation, try to get the Cleveland Orchestra (conducted by George Szell at the time) doing Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto & Mozart's 25th Piano Concerto. Leon Fleischer is the pianist for both; the two were sold together on the same record (for whatever reason they do such things).
Got to tell ya, I wasn't all that impressed with Maazel. His Mozart was not as . . ."mysterious" as I think it should have been.
The words "Mozart" and "mysterious" don't even belong in the same sentence. I always thought of Mozart's music as aloof and tinged with pomposity ... so clean and crystal clear ... music for the elitist masses.
Well, whatever flats yer boat.
I meant "floats," obviously.
